Work at the Access Center with Safe Place fo Youth

Volunteers are absolutely essential to SPY’s mission. They’re in need of volunteers to participate in shifts at their Access Center on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. There are two shifts, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm or from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Responsibilities and opportunities include things like: Run check-in or the desk. Greet youth as they arrive or help them make sure youth access the showers they need. Monitor the Clothing Closet. Each day, youth members can select one outfit from the clothing closet. Get involved with Healing Arts or the Digital Arts Lab. Volunteers with a passion for arts, yoga, graphic design or more may find this volunteering opportunity especially rewarding. Outreach. Engage with street-based youth out in the community alongside one of their Outreach and Engagement Case Managers, providing access to survival resources and SPY's onsite programs. Housing Sites. Support the clothing closet, donation transport, and more across each of their housing sites. And more! There are often done-in-a-day projects and special volunteer opportunities if you’re looking for ways to get involved outside of Access Center hours. Prepare Welcome Baskets and Kits for ASOH Recipients

Prepare welcome baskets and kits for ASOH recipients.The kits and baskets are designed to serve a specific function or to be placed in a specific room of the home (for example, cooking kits, bathroom essentials kits, etc.). You can find a full list of baskets and kits that they create there here. Especially important is providing essential items for kids: clothing, shoes, school supplies, toys, and games. Host a Book Collection for A Sense of Home

ASOH is in need of culturally diverse books to create libraries of love in each home. To host a book drive, you can collect books from your community or you can create your own online campaign. Please refer to their Love Library for the young adults they serve here. And for the kids they serve please see the Love Library book list here. Help A Sense of Home Print and Frame Pictures

ASOH will send electronic photos that you will then print and place in frames. Framed photos can be delivered or shipped to the ASOH warehouse. This all happens within a two-week period. They highly encourage participants to plan ahead and hold a “frame drive” within your community. Join forces with local community members to gather beautiful frames to be filled with wonderful memories. Printed photos will be lovingly placed within frames, helping to make the recipient’s space truly feel like a home. If interested, please contact us at home@asenseofhome.org

Create Art for Homes or Host an Art Exhibit for A Sense of Home

Provide Groceries and Recipes for ASOH Recipients

Buy $300 worth of groceries to last one family one month and inspire cooking, meal prepping, and yummy family dinners. Create a how-to video showcasing your favorite recipe using the ingredients found in the shopping list. Share your cooking video or a recipe, and challenge others using the hashtag #cookingconnected and tag @asenseofhomeorg for a chance to be featured!

Be a Guest Chef at Ascencia

Every morning and evening, volunteers prepare and serve hot meals for homeless families and adults in Ascencia's Emergency Housing program. These “Guest Chefs” give their time and energy, generously donating food and a great deal of compassion with each plate. Volunteers in the Guest Chef Program commit to preparing meals for approximately 45 shelter residents on a daily basis. Volunteers typically create a Guest Chef team comprised of fellow members of a congregation, service organization, co-workers, family members, friends, etc. f you are interested in signing up, please be sure to review our safety protocols for on-site volunteering and visit our Sign Up Genius. Volunteer at Home Program and Create Hygiene Kits with Ascencia

Ascencia's Volunteer from Home Program was created in response to COVID-19, as a way to keep their volunteers engaged and connected to Ascencia. One way is to create hygiene kits. They are asking volunteers to purchase travel sized hygiene materials and assemble them into gallon sized Ziploc bags. Get a virtual group together to make hygiene kits for their clients and for their Outreach Team to distribute to individuals on the street. Hygiene kits include various travel sized toiletries including: shampoo, conditioner, lotion, body wash, toothpaste and toothbrushes (can be full sized), combs etc. Please label bags male or female.

Make Lunches for Ascencia Clients

Ascencia's Volunteer from Home Program was created in response to COVID-19, as a way to keep their volunteers engaged and connected to Ascencia. One way is to make brown bag lunches for clients in the shelter and individuals on the streets. Their Outreach Team goes out every day and will take brown bag lunches to those in need. Lunches can include peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fruit, chips, water, etc.

Volunteer on a Budget for Ascencia

Ascencia's Volunteer from Home Program was created in response to COVID-19, as a way to keep their volunteers engaged and connected to Ascencia. One way is to get create and volunteer on a budget. Fundraise $100-$120 to cook and serve breakfast to their shelter residents. Make PB&J sandwiches for their outreach teams and shelter residents. Purchase 5 loaves of bread and a peanut butter and jelly jar and create bagged sandwiches for our clients. (Estimated cost: $30.00 for 50 sandwiches, including Ziploc baggies.)
